Watch this video or refer to the steps below.
Before you start, ensure you have an active subscription with a VPN service provider that supports OpenVPN manual configuration. Click here to check the OpenVPN providers compatible with GL.iNet.
Below are steps to set up an OpenVPN client via the router's web admin panel.
1. Log in to your router¶
Open a web browser and access the router's web admin panel (default IP: 192.168.8.1). Log in with your admin password.

2. Set up VPN client¶
Refer to the section corresponding to the VPN service provider you are using.
NordVPN
-
In the router's web admin panel, go to VPN > OpenVPN Client.
-
Click NordVPN.

-
Enter your service credentials, then click Save and Continue.
Note: It is NOT the login account email/password, but the service credentials obtained from NordVPN website -> Nord Dashboard.

-
In the prompt, select the VPN locations you want to connect, then click Apply.

-
Select the VPN server you want to connect to, click the three-dot icon and Start.

Other VPN service providers (E.g., Surfshark)
-
In the router's web admin panel, go to VPN > OpenVPN Client.
-
Click Add Manually.

-
Set a name. You can enter the name of your VPN service provider, then click the check icon.

-
Ensure you have downloaded the configuration file provided by your VPN service provider, and the service credentials if any.
-
Upload the configuration file you downloaded.
Enter the service credentials if required, then click Apply.

-
Next to the VPN server address, click the three-dot icon and Start.

3. Verify VPN connection¶
Open a web browser and search for your IP address and location. If they match the VPN server's IP (instead of your Internet service provider's IP) and location, the VPN connection is successful.
